Public Health Department
We exist to protect and improve the nation’s health and wellbeing, and reduce health inequalities. While medicine and nursing are vital for helping and supporting people when they fall ill, work in public health contributes to reducing the causes of ill-health and improving people’s health and wellbeing. It is widely acknowledged that health care costs far too much in this country, while at the same time at least 47 million Americans are uninsured.
Surveillance data should be retained in readily accessible archival form, not only to document the evolving health status of a population but also to help us understand the predictors of disease and injury. Unfortunately Public Health is simply imperfect, but as a Public Health advocate, resources do need to be directed to general Public Health rather than specific high profile diseases.
