Overseen by the Surgeon General, the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps is a diverse team of more than 6,700 highly qualified, public health professionals. Their ability to detect agents of biological terrorism and public health significance plays a significant role in national security, as witnessed by the response of LRN laboratories to the 2001 anthrax events and to daily threat detection in all 50 states.
Today, we are faced with a two tier system of private health insurance cover which is supposed to guarantee that a person has access to the best possible medical facilities and a long line of people who are just as much in need of those facilities, but who simply do not have the financial power to access them, and are therefore, faced with long public health queues.
A second class honours degree: entry to the MSc Public Health is highly competitive and applicants are recommended to have a 2:1 or high 2:2 from a UK university, or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard, in a natural sciences, clinical disciplines or social science.
While public health is comprised of many professional disciplines such as medicine, dentistry, nursing, optometry, nutrition, social work, environmental sciences, health education, health services administration, and the behavioral sciences, its activities focus on entire populations rather than on individual patients.
Voting on a procedural matter, the Senate rejected an amendment offered by Senator Mike Johanns of Nebraska that would have used the resources in the Fund as an off-set for a new federal income tax reporting requirement that will be implemented by the Internal Revenue Service in 2012.
